The term alternative rock, in its modern incarnation, is fraught with contradictions.
Alternative rock at its emergence was a category used to group underground music of the 70s. It celebrated and elevated independent music over the output of commercial record companies. It took power away from the big traditional record producers and, through outside exposure, allowed fans to be the arbiters of their own tastes. The musicians were energized by the dynamic energy that allowed experimentation and sincerity to thrive without compromise.
From the DIY punk rock spirit of the 70s to the experimentation and diversification of the 80s, alternative rock has grown and flourished through independent publications and zines, independent radio stations and word of mouth. ear of music lovers who have embraced the experimentation of the genre.
However, the 90s saw the alternative scene break into the mainstream as an immensely popular genre in its own right. While it’s open to debate whether this has benefited or harmed the music, it has certainly helped his bands and musicians succeed both financially and creatively. After all, art has no chance of shaping society if no one sees it.
Alternative rock has spawned a movement around some of the greatest bands in music history…
Quintessential Lyric: (from ‘crawling‘)
“There’s something inside of me that pulls beneath the surface / Consuming (confusing what’s real) / This lack of self-control, I’m afraid it will never end / Controlling (confusing what’s real)”
Although Linkin Park has a plethora of hits, Faint is one track that best encapsulates the band’s energy. The lyrics are introspective and personal yet largely relatable. Loneliness gives way to fighting back and refusing to be ignored.
Musically, Chester Bennington’s instruments and voice come into their own on Meteora (2003). Although the track is driven by Rob Bourdon’s drums, that doesn’t take away from the rest of the instruments (like a lot of less nu metal of the time did). Mike Shinoda’s string arrangement, as well as violins, violas and cellos only add to the impact.
Definition of album: [REAИIMATIOИ] (2002)
Linkin Park were stars in their own genre, pushing nu metal and rap rock to the forefront of mainstream rock. However, it was with their remix album [REAИIMATIOИ] that the band showed not only their willingness to experiment with their sound, but also their talent for it. The album is the beginning of Linkin Park’s rise out of nu metal into the band they would become.
