Once again, the classic rock format added the most stations from July 2021 to July 2022, as 35 stations entered the format over the past 12 months, an increase of 6%. Additionally, the classic rock format has picked up 10 new stations since the start of 2022, surpassing only Classic Hits (+16) as the format with the most stations added from January 2022 to July 2022, according to Indoor Radiothe Format Counts monthly monitor of US stations. The classic hits format picked up 22 stations from July 2021 to July 2022, a 2.2% increase.
Two other formats also saw gains this year and year over year. Spanish has gained 23 stations from July 2021 to July 2022 (+2%) and three since the start of the year, while Christian Contemporary is up 18 y/y (+1%) and has recovered new since January.
Looking at the total number of stations across the top ten formats, country radio leads with 2,180 total stations in July 2022, followed by news/talk (2,017), religion (1,989), contemporary Christianity ( 1,331), Spanish (1,257), variety (1,237), classic hits (1,191), classic rock (631), sports (631) and CHR (598).
Month-over-month, Country was flat, News/Talk was down 12 stations from June, Religion was down eight stations, Classic Hits was down two stations, and Variety was down one point. sale since June.
However, Contemporary Christian gained six stations, Classic Hits took two new stations, and Classic Rock and Spanish-format stations added one piece.
