Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist and boring old man Flea dispelled modern rock music while guesting on Sirius XM’s Pearl Jam Radio, hosted by Pearl Jam guitarist and boring old man Mike McCready.
Alternative Nation notes that Flea says of those pesky 1990s, “I just remember being so excited that we were playing with [Pearl Jam] and with Smashing Pumpkins, because it was just an exciting time for rock music. A lot of times, especially lately, I think of rock as kind of a dead form in a lot of ways. Nothing to take away from us and [Pearl Jam]because obviously I think we’re relevant bands that have real energy”.
Of course, totally relevant, who would say otherwise? But you wanna know why rock music is dead now? It’s the damn industry, huh? Everyone has too much business sense.
“When we were kids,” he continued, “when I said I wanted to be in a rock band and that’s what I do for a living, that’s what I was going to do, no doubt. You’d get, ‘You’re fucking crazy, you’re crazy. You’ll never get a decent job in your life. What are you doing? You’re wasting your life.’ was like shit i don’t care this is what i wanna do it means everything to me i found a home i’ve been a weird neurotic lonely kid all my life i’ve always been the kid they called queer in high school, punk rock gave me a home.
“But these days you decide you want to be in a rock band, it’s like, ‘Oh great, we’ll get you an image consultant, and a lawyer, and a manager, and let’s see what we do. can do here,” he adds. “This is a great money-making opportunity for you, junior.”
I don’t know what career officer he’s referring to here, but anyway budding rock stars, stop being savvy about the music business and you too could make music like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam. And how joyful would that be?
